I could manage a classroom. But I wanted more than compliance.
For the first ten years of my teaching career, I spent a lot of energy getting students to follow directions and keeping everything running.
And I could do it. But when I wasn't there, so much of what made the classroom work fell apart.
Eventually, I started looking at teaching differently. I wanted students to understand our expectations, contribute to our routines, think for themselves, and take ownership of the classroom we were building together.
That shift changed my teaching. Years later, as an instructional coach, it shaped how I supported other teachers, too. And it's why I founded Teachers Empowerment Network.
The teacher is still the leader. But the teacher doesn't have to be the only person making the classroom work.
